Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

SERVPRO of San Diego City SW Wishes Logan Heights a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home? Are your smoke detectors working properly?

These two things can help you avoid an in-home cooking fire. Stay safe this Thanksgiving.

The Risk of Residential Fires is Highest at Thanksgiving

Here at SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW, we recommend putting safety-related items on the to-do lists to make holidays good ones.

The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) has researched causes of residential fires in the United States. The biggest cause of fire is lack of attention while cooking.

During the Thanksgiving holiday, there is more cooking than other times of the year, and there are more distractions as well.

These two facts combine to make the Thanksgiving holiday the most likely day for a fire to start at someone’s home.

Safety Tips

  • Don’t leave the kitchen when food is boiling or frying
  • Check the oven regularly regardless of the cooking method
  • If you don’t remember whether you have replaced the batteries in the smoke detectors, change them now
  • If you are cooking a turkey outdoors, keep the grill/ smoker/ deep fryer away from wood, brush, towels, or other flammable materials
  • Vegan and vegetarian dinners don’t make homes immune from fires
  • Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the cooking equipment
  • Follow the instructions – really – no one will accuse you of being a wimp for following instructions

Alternatives to the Traditional Meal

  • Give your meal Mexican flair with home-made molé. If the entire-day preparation is too much, buy it, but make sure to hide the jar.
  • Use turkey (or not), favorite vegetables, and ramen noodles to make a festive ramen bowl.
  • Toss cheese tortellini with fresh vegetables, olive oil, and basil – you can roast the vegetables for an autumnal touch
  • Pumpkin-packed pastas can be ravioli, lasagna, or stuffed shells.
  • A cranberry-orange sauce on just about anything will make the dish a holiday treat. The sauce can even be part of a dessert.
  • Use wonton wrappers to surround pureed sweet potatoes (or any root vegetable) for an international harvest vibe – make small squares, bake, steam, fry, or boil, and tell everyone it’s Asian ravioli.
  • If nothing appeals to you, remember this culinary fact: pile on the carbohydrates and cheese to make almost anyone happy.

Dad Joke of the Week

Why should musicians hire turkeys?

Turkeys come with their own drumsticks.

Alternate Dad Joke of the Week (it’s the joke that is the alternate, not the dad)

What is a pumpkin’s favorite sport?

Squash
