When the Tub Overflows, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW Does More than Mop Up

Throw Out the Bathroom with the Bathwater

Water damage from an overflowing tub may provoke the above reaction, but it probably won’t be necessary.

At SERVPRO® of San Diego City SW, we have seen impressive damage from overflowing tubs, but we haven’t had to advise homeowners to scrap the entire room and start over.

If a tub overflow leads to an unplanned indoor waterfall, call us at 619-269-5004 any time of the day or night, any day. Emergency services are always available because disasters aren’t limited to working hours.

The amount and severity of water damage are functions of how much water spilled out, and the length of time the water had out of the tub. We want to minimize damage, which is why we live by the motto: Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Possible Results of a Tub Overflow

Standard bathtubs hold about 80 gallons of water, which probably looks like more when it is pouring into the flooring or throughout the home. Water damage is a major cause of insurance claims, with tub overflows being one of the top three causes (after storms and burst pipes). Damages may include:

Microbial growth

Even clean water provides a great environment for bacteria and mold to grow. The growth starts within 24 to 48 hours, damaging the home and harming the air quality.

Damaged floors and ceilings

At SERVPRO of San Diego City SW, we remove all the excess moisture as soon as we arrive. Water can stain and weaken the ceiling, leading to discoloration and crumbling plaster or support beams. Linoleum and wood are especially prone to water damage, but water can harm any kind of flooring, even concrete.

Damaged Subflooring

Given enough time, or enough water, the subflooring may crack or disintegrate.

Wet Plaster or Drywall

The damage is more than unsightly; it is a sign of destruction. We do replace damaged plaster or drywall, but if we get to the site quickly enough, it may not be necessary.

Electrical damage

Water and electrical wiring are not a good mix. If there is water inside the walls, shut off the electricity.

Stained and Bad-smelling Furniture and Carpets

Damp textiles are prize environments for bacteria and mold. Don’t worry; we mitigate the damage.

On the Brighter Side

Keep the drains clear, don’t let anyone block the overflow drain, and read these quotes:

“The only way I'd be caught without makeup is if my radio fell in the bathtub while I was taking a bath and electrocuted me and I was in between makeup at home. I hope my husband would slap a little lipstick on me before he took me to the morgue.” – Dolly Parton

“I remember being a bathtub singer. You know, the type that sings and everybody's like, 'Shut up.’” – Sean Paul

“Each black hole spins on its axis like the Earth spins. That spin creates two vortexes of twisting space, somewhat like vortexes in a bathtub or a whirlpool.” – Kip Thorne

Remember: Keep the Bathtub Water in the Tub
