Water damage is one of those things that not everyone thinks about, especially being in San Diego. Typically when one thinks of water damage to a property, you think of hurricanes, heavy rains, heavy flooding, etc. And let us be the ones to tell you - heavy rains can cause extreme damage to San Diego properties, but there are also other causes to potential catastrophic water damage to a commercial property. Are you prepared?

Some preparation steps you can take include:

1.) Ensuring you have the right insurance policies in place. Do an insurance review with your agent or broker to be certain you have the proper coverage in place.

2.) Having a business continuity plan in place. Many businesses don't, and it's not unheard of for a business to go under if something unexpected happens and they can't come back from it.

3.) Take advantage of the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile (ERP!) Call us anytime for a free ERP consult.

Commercial Water Damage Medical Building Hillcrest

Commercial Commercial Water Damage Medical Building Hillcrest A medical building in the Hillcrest area of San Diego.

SERVPRO of San Diego City SW is quickly becoming the go-to restoration contractor of choice for medical buildings and hospitals in San Diego County.

On a Monday morning last month we got a call from a building engineer at a medical facility building in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego who had come into work Monday morning to find significant water damage from a supply line leak on the third floor, affecting units all the way down to the ground level.

Our team was onsite within an hour setting up temporary power (the generator that we personally own), as well as handling water extraction and dehumidifier equipment setup.

This photo shows the "during" process of the job, where we had to do some demolition throughout the building, though we saved as many materials as we could. This shows a section of drywall that we had to remove, as well as our drying equipment to dry the wood framing.

The building engineer was incredibly pleased with the level of service and attention our team paid to his building, and even called us 2 weeks later when they had another very small water damage issue, thankfully for them.

When you or your team need the top commercial water damage cleanup team in San Diego, call us 24/7 at 619-269-5004.

This was a significant water damage claim due to a toilet flap being stuck open over a weekend, and the facilities team coming in on Monday morning to a mess of water.

Having worked with SERVPRO of San Diego City SW in the past, the team immediately knew who to call to ensure they were in the best hands when facing damage of this size.

We worked hand-in-hand with the facilities team of the medical building, walking them through best practices, daily updates, and explaining what the entire process would and should look like.

We got the biggest compliment to our team and service when they asked if we'd be willing to travel across country when other losses happen to their properties. Of course we said yes!

When you are facing water damage at your residence or business, call us 24/7 at 619-269-5004.

Are You and Your Property Prepared for an Emergency?

5/30/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Are You and Your Property Prepared for an Emergency? Flood disaster cleanup efforts.

If you have never found yourself in an emergency disaster situation, you can consider yourself
lucky. As a trusted leader in emergency services, we assist property owners each and every
day with disasters that they suddenly find themselves facing, and many of them don’t know
where to begin.

Fortunately, we’re here to help. And we can assist you with providing some insight on how you
and your team of trusted professionals can and should prepare yourselves, so that if you’re
faced with an emergency, you know where to begin.

If you are also someone who does not have a business continuity plan in place, you are not alone.

However, being prepared for any situation is vital. First and foremost, for the safety of others,
and secondly, for the preservation of your property. We have partnered with The American Red Cross in situations of emergency and disaster, so with that, here are some tips to exercise emergency preparedness:

1. Know the Needs of Your Residents and Staff – Are there people within your building/
property that may need help exiting during an emergency? Who will be there to assist
them?
2. Where are the Exit and Egress Points? – If you have a multi floor building and the doors
to the escape route are blocked, can someone safely exit through a window?
3. Design Your Emergency Exit Plan – Find the safest routes and back up routes to exit the
building and identify where the safest & closest meeting area is during emergency
4. Execute drills of emergency plans – Educates and informs residents and staff to proper
egress from property
5. Train staff on the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Plan (more details on this later!) –
Prepares them for the unexpected
6. Know your local resources and contacts – Faster response time for providers to assist in
a disaster.
7. An overwhelming majority of business have a preparedness plan in place. Do you? Planning
ahead can serve as an insurance policy aimed at peace of mind for homeowners, property
managers and businesses. Knowing that you are ready for whatever happens can give you
some peace of mind so that in the event you find yourself in the midst of a disaster situation,
you’re equipped to handle it.
8. 15-40 percent of businesses fail following a natural or manmade disaster.
9. 94 percent of small business owners believe a disaster could seriously disrupt their
business within the next two years.

One way we can help you is by assisting you in developing a free SERVPRO EmergencyREADY Profile for your business. The Emergency Ready Profile, or ERP, can help minimize business interruption by having an immediate plan of action. It’s essentially a database
of everything you need to know in relation to your property with emergency contacts – all in one
place – available to access anywhere you have internet connection. Knowing what to do should
an emergency arise can make all the difference.

Here’s a little bit more about the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile:
1. Free assessment of property – No need to allocate funds
2. Provide a concise profile document that contains only the most critical information
needed in the event of an emergency – The best way to be prepared
3. Identification of key decision makers – An established chain of command can expedite
restoration process, saving time and money
4. Guide to the property or building after a disaster – Minimize the time your business is
inactive or property is inaccessible
5. Establish your designated provider in mitigation and emergency restoration – SERVPRO
is an industry leader, no disaster is too small or too large
6. Provides facility details such as locations of shut off valves, access points and
emergency resources – Having a reference of what to do and how to do it allows emergency
personnel and you to be ready for whatever happens

Depending on your location in San Diego County, your home, property or business might be
more susceptible to a flood or to a fire. Living in California, everyone can potentially be harmed
by an earthquake. So, the most important thing for you to do is make a plan and become
prepared. Take the opportunity to look at www.ready.gov and find out additional ways that you and those important to you can be more prepared for natural and manmade disasters.

San Diego Commercial Water Damage

2/13/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial San Diego Commercial Water Damage Here's a photo of a commercial building in Poway that suffered from serious damage. This is a "during the cleanup" shot.

It's true that commercial water damage in San Diego is often the result of floods and water that comes from weather events and storms, especially here in San Diego. But - what many business owners and business space renters forget is that storms and severe weather are not the only cause of floods and water damage to a commercial property. Commercial water damage in San Diego is surprisingly common year-round, and it can have a drastic effect on the operation of your business. Here are some of the more common causes of water damage to commercial buildings.

1. Sprinkler system malfunction

This one we see A LOT! And usually it happens on weekends when one comes in to the office Monday morning to an incredible amount of water damage. Some office and retail buildings have sprinkler systems that work in conjunction with fire protection systems. These sprinklers come in handy during a fire emergency, but they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are faulty or in need of replacement.

2. Damaged appliances and equipmen

Any business that makes use of appliances or equipment (common in restaurants and catering facilities), can find themselves in a messy water damage situation if an appliance fails and sends water across the building.

3. Broken pipes and plumbing

If the plumbing system in your workplace fails, the end result could be minor to serious water damage. We've seen it all here at SERVPRO.

4. Backed up sewer lines

Another common cause of commercial water damage in San Diego is backed up sewer lines. Often this comes as a surprise. If the sewer line to your building becomes backed up or damaged, there are some potential dangers associated with contaminated Black Water. We have certified IICRC technicians to help.

If your business has suffered commercial water damage, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW will get you back up and running again. Call us anytime 24/7 at (619) 269-5004 for fast help.  Check out our team here.

Preparing Your San Diego Business For an Earthquake

7/13/2017 (Permalink)

An earthquake can happen at any time, so read on for a few quick tips on how to make sure your business is prepared. And remember, when disaster strikes, you can always call SERVPRO of San Diego City SW for assistance.

"An earthquake can happen at anytime and anywhere. Unlike many other natural disasters, earthquakes can strike during any season. It can also occur with little to no warning at all.

Earthquakes can knock out heat, power, and communications services, sometimes for days at a time, leaving people stuck without utilities or other services. Your goal for protection is to learn to Drop, Cover, and Hold On during an earthquake.

Most casualties and injuries during an earthquake occur when: people fall while trying to walk or run during the shaking; when they are hit by falling, flying, or sliding items or non-structural debris; and/or when they are struck or trapped by collapsing walls or other parts of the building.

The America’s PrepareAthon! How to Prepare for an Earthquake explains what the public should do before, during and after an earthquake:

  • To prevent potential injuries, take the time to secure your space. Secure items that might fall, fly, or slide in an earthquake. Imagine if the room was picked up and shaken up and down and side to side and then determine what items would be thrown around.
  • Make sure your business is safer during earthquakes and more resistant to earthquake damage. Get professional help to assess the building’s structure and then take steps to install nonstructural solutions, including foundation bolting and cripple wall bracing.

The America’s PrepareAthon! Prepare Your Organization for an Earthquake Playbook  explains how business owners can take the necessary steps now to prepare themselves and their staff for an earthquake.

The playbook helps to enhance organizational coordination and communication on preparedness and operational continuity by recommending the following:

  • Hold a preparedness discussion to explain company plans and policies to motivate employees to be better prepared at home and work;
  • Explain and practice Drop, Cover, and Hold On;
  • Conduct a tabletop exercise with your staff to ensure that the organization is familiar with and knows how to implement readiness plans;
  • Develop an employee communications plan with all staff contact information, including emergency points of contact;
  • Sign up for local alerts and warnings in your community; and
  • Organize and keep handy important documents such as insurance information and rental or mortgage agreements.

It is important that business owners discuss their plans with their employees to ensure they are aware of what to do and where to go during an earthquake threat.

Top Mold Damage Tips to Remember After a Flood

If your home or commercial building recently flooded due to storm damage or some sort of plumbing issues, you're probably unsure of the next step. Not only are you worried about property damage from the water, but you also have to worry about mold in your home or business. Mold can affected indoor air quality, can cause significant property damage, and can cause a foul smell that even the best deodorization techniques can't get rid of! Follow these tips if you're dealing with residential or commercial mold in San Diego.

Get Rid of Moisture

This is the very first step! Before the mold can be properly addressed, as much moisture as possible needs to be removed. If there is standing water, it can be dangerous to walk into your home or commercial property, so please make sure you can safely enter the building or structure.

Protect Yourself

You just never really know what can be floating around in standing water that can hurt you. For example, electrical wiring. You don't want to endure an electrical shock. Once you know you can safely enter, PROTECT YOURSELF by wearing protective clothing, such as gloves and a face mask.

Hire a Professional

Experts can come in and assess the true extent of the damage and help ensure all of the mold is properly remediated. We promise, it could save you a lot of time, money and headaches in the future. Protect your San Diego commercial property from rain or storm damage

6/28/2017 (Permalink)

Protect your San Diego commercial property from rain or storm damage

Gutters are a very important part of roofs for commercial buildings as they are responsible for transporting water and debris off of roofs. Especially in stormy seasons, it is important to ensure gutters are functioning to their highest ability.

Removal of water and debris in gutters lightens the load on the roof, preventing the possibility of roof leaks and caving under stress from weather. It is important gutters are maintained in optimal working condition to prevent damage to the entire commercial or residential structure. Even though we don't see TOO much rain in San Diego, it's a good idea to be cautious.

Gutters should be inspected twice yearly and cleared of debris that could prevent flow of water and materials from roof. Also, check for standing water in gutters as it could indicate inadequate flow of water. Water should be moving down off the roof toward storm drainage areas. Keeping trees trimmed near the roof will alleviate stress on gutters because the branches will not slow water flow or contribute more debris to gutters.

Ensure water is being funneled away from the building once off the roof, as flooding can sometimes occur due to runoff not having proper.

Water stains on the internal ceiling can indicate a roof leak.

In the case of water damage, roof leaks, and storm damage, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW provides 24-hour emergency services. Call us at 619-269-5004.

What Causes Commercial Water Damage?

5/18/2017 (Permalink)

What Causes Commercial Water Damage?

Most commercial property owners in San Diego assume their property can only suffer significant water damage during torrential downpours and rare flooding from rainstorms. While this can be true, weather like this is few and far between in San Diego county.

Believe it or not, the most common commercial water damage disasters happen from the following:

1.) Sprinkler systems

Some office and retail buildings still have outdated sprinkler systems that work with fire protection systems. While these sprinklers can come in handy during a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage if they are in need of replacement.

2.) Appliances and Equipment

We see this most often in restaurants and catering halls, as well as businesses that have appliances and equipment that make use of water. If the appliance falls and sends water across your building, especially on a Friday afternoon when no one is in until monday monring, you may come in to face a water emergency! We've seen this happen A LOT.

3.) Broken pipes and plumbing

Just like in residential properties, if the plumbing system in your workplace fails, water damage could happen!

If your business or commercial property is suffering from commercial water damage, SERVPRO of San Diego City SW is happy to get you back up and running in record time! Contact us 24/7 at 619-269-5004 for speedy help.
